8月マティとは、旧暦8月は1年で最も邪気が入りやすい月とされることから、島全体で邪気を払い、健康や豊作を祈願する行事です。久高島では、旧正月に並ぶ大きな行事とされています。
The Hachigatsu Mati festival has begun on Kudaka Island as of yesterday. Starting today, traffic restrictions are in place — please follow all instructions and signs when getting around.
Hachigatsu Mati is a traditional island-wide event held during the eighth month of the lunar calendar, which is believed to be the time of year when negative spirits are most likely to enter. The entire island comes together to ward off these spirits and pray for good health and a bountiful harvest. It is considered one of the most important events on Kudaka Island, on par with the Lunar New Year.
